Oil Filler Door
I'm using the standard hinge on the oil door, and a pair of Hartwell latches instead of the camlocs that come with the kit. I played around with some consealed hinge ideas, but they didn't work out to my liking. The latches are mounted horizontally. They latch better that way, and it's much easier to match the curve of the door. I also added a flox 'goal post' stiffener to the inside of the door so it won't bow open when I'm cruising along at 500 knots. :) I'm real happy with how it turned out.

Larry,
I used the same type of fastners, and put a stiffner rib, and my oil door still lifts.
My fast. are vertical as opposed to your horiz., so that may be enough. The rib is alum. and runs the vert length on the front side. I will one day put a third fast. on the front horizontal to keep the edge down.
Were 2 latches necessary or would one do
I've heard a lot of people commenting that their door wants to flex open a little when in flight -- so I went with two latches. It can't hurts except for another 2 onces and $15. I think Van's show two fasteners of a different type in the plans. I wanted flush with no tools required to open, so I went with these. Check EBay for good deals.
I plan on the Hartwell latches myself. Have you noticed any lift in your door infight? Just want to get it right the first time. TIA, Bruce
No, there is no lift. I've been very happy with how the door turned out. If I had to do it again, I'd do it the same way.
