Electronic Ignition Rewire

March 27, 2005 9:05 PM

With about 78 hours on the plane, my electronic ignition started acting up again with erratic tach readings and occasional rough idling. This is the third time the wiring on the timing pick-up has failed. After sending the whole unit back to ElectroAir for repairs, I decided to try something a little different when reinstalling it. I changed out the plugs on both the pick-up and the brain-box and fabricated a new section of aircraft-grade wire that will connect the two. This new wire will absorb all the vibrations. Should it fail, I can replace it without removing the other ignition components from the plane. You can see in the picture that the pick-up and it's wiring (the grey wire) are anchored to the engine via a bolt on the vacuum pad and should have no movement relative to each other. The new wire (white with black heat-shrink) has a big service loop in it and is secured at the plug with some Goop adhesive. Hopefully I'll get better service out of this arrangement.

Details of my previous installation can be seen here.

UPDATE 03/30/05 - I ran the engine for the first time with this new set-up and the problem was still there during run-up. After shutting down I checked the LED on the ignition box and it was red, indicating bad input from the mag hole pick-up. I checked the red and black pick-up wires and found 748 mOhms -- within limits. I discussed with Jeff over the phone, and he said to send it back in. Frustrating...

Seems like this unit is screaming "replace me with a magneto". What % performance increase do you get with electronic ignition, and is it worth any decrease in reliability????

Yes, I hear it saying that too!! In progress! -Larry.
