Electronic Ignition Retired

April 30, 2005 11:05 PM

After having to service my Electro-Air electronic ignition for the fifth time, I decided enough was enough. I've had no trouble with the good ol' slick mag on the left side, and pretty consistent trouble with the EI on the right. So I took it off and put it on the shelf and ordered a duplicate 4371 Slick mag, as is found on the left side. I tried to be as thorough as possible when gathering parts so down-time would be minimized. Ha, Ha. I forgot about the adapter needed for the impulse mag, the longer studs, and the mag gear. I thought I could use the gear off of the electronic ignition, but the gear for the impulse mag is completely different. I ended up acquiring a gear locally for cheap. (Let's just leave it at that. You wouldn't believe the rest of it if I told you.)

Anyway, I got all the EI components off the plane, changed the wiring from the console in the cockpit, rewired the input for the tach, installed the mag, ran two new harnesses, new cooling tube, timed the mag myself (right the first time!), etc. Between chasing parts down and doing all this, a month has passed. Do I even remember how to fly this thing? Yes, I do. And it feels real good to be back in the air. Thanks to all those who helped.
