RV Fly-In at LAL

January 21, 2007 7:43 PM

Six RV's from the Carolinas went down to the RV fly-in at Lakeland, FL. We had a bit of a delay getting started because of fog, but eventually we were on our way. After lunch at Cedar Key we went into Lakeland as a flight of six. Other than asking us to slow down (grin), the tower was more than happy to let us do a couple passes. By the time we parked and set up camp, it was time for dinner. It was strange (in a nice way) seeing the Sun-N-Fun grounds with less than a million people running around, which is normally the case during Sun-N-Fun itself.

Most folks arrived Saturday; about 100 RV's total. Many examples of great workmanship. That evening we had another nice meal on site and later enjoyed the campfire for a couple hours.

Sunday we headed back home. We had almost 20 knots of tailwind most of the way. The last 50 miles was a little dicey though with some light rain and temps barely above freezing. We had to stop about 35 miles short of home, at JQF, due to ice starting to build up on the windshields. After a twenty minute break we tried again and made it the rest of the way. A good trip, but as always it's good to be home.
